Fayum mummy portraiture – stunningly beautiful, amazingly ancient art

24 Feb

Fayum-11The Fayum mummy portraits are extraordinary in many ways. While contemporary to much of the well known Egyptian murals and portraits, they are absolutely lifelike. Technically and stylistically, they are much closer to the Greco Roman tradition–and would not be out of place in an exhibition of Renaissance portraiture.

Except, of course, they are some 1500 years older than that. Give or take a century.
