Godspeed, Sally Ride

23 Jul

Many people share my admiration for Ms Ride. Yes, the US was only two decades behind the Soviets in sending a woman to space, but when NASA finally wised up, what a woman did they chose!

Physicist. Professor. Astronaut. Woman.

Reading some of the news bits about Ms Ride’s passing, this comment by her ex-husband moves me almost to tears:

“While she never enjoyed being a celebrity, she recognized that it gave her the opportunity to encourage children, particularly young girls, to reach their full potential,” Hawley said. “Sally Ride, the astronaut and the person, allowed many young girls across the world to believe they could achieve anything if they studied and worked hard. I think she would be pleased with that legacy.”

Ms Ride must have been indeed a deeply decent human being for her ex-husband to praise her so immediately after her death. And so must be Mr Hawley. I haven’t seen many men feel so kindly and equitably over an ex-wife, let alone one who was gay.
