What the hell is wrong with humanity?

8 Aug

This Monday, three boys forced their way into the home of a 51 year old woman with a mental disability, and beat her up. The beating was severe enough to require hospital time for the victim–and the little hooligans got away with all of $20 the poor woman had in her purse.

The mother of the eldest child, 10, turned him in after the attack, because he’s “out of control” (I’ll say). The other two children are 9 and 7–and because of their ages won’t face actual charges.

It would be very easy to blame the mother of the 10 year old. To condemn her for “not raising her child well”–but first, I know nothing of the circumstances of this particular family. Single parent? economic hardship? abuse in the household or school? Who the hell knows.

Second, while I would like to think that most cases where minors attack others are brought on by lack of parental involvement, or by abuse, or even by neglect. Hell, even by peer pressure and “bad companions.” However, I believe there are those who are born without a conscience–no amount of involvement and love can imbue them with a true perception of right and wrong.

What I find most sad about this particular attack? A captain with the Philadelphia police finds it “refreshing” that the mother would get involved enough to turn the boy in. Which to me means that he’s seen plenty of similar cases–perhaps not with such young attackers, but still children–where victims never get any kind of redress.

It’s heartbreaking. Not just for the victim but because those three children are victims of something. Whether it be abuse, neglect or bad genetics.

My daughter is 11 now and it would be impossible for her or ny of her friends to show that kind of brutality. I hope and pray that her generation more reflects her than those children.

[…] So you are bored–as sometimes happens with thirteen and fourteen year olds. What better way to alleviate your boredom than to beat up a man badly enough to send him to the hospital? (At least these are not 10 and under) […]
