xkcd’s “Types of Scientific Papers” meme, but make it romance

3 May

What can I say? I could not resist.

Types of genre romance think pieces, showing twelve such papers, with the following titles: "it's mommy porn: a comprehensive history of genre romance by someone who doesn't read it"; "No, really, it's just mommy porn: did you know there's sex in some genre romance?"; "I skimmed 50 Shades, I am now an expert on genre romance"; "All I know about romance, I learned from reading think pieces: a top ten list of romances (none of which actually are)"; "I found out romance makes money, so I'll write something else , and explain how I'm 'expanding' the genre by not having a HEA"; "Did we mention mommy porn? Look at the covers! (of 30 year old romances)"; "If I mention Fabio and mention the lurid covers, that automatically makes me an expert, doesn't it?"; "Romance is formulaic, ergo, shitty--what do you mean, all genre fiction has conventions?"; "Pablum: it's about relationships and the protagonists don't die at the end, a very serious thesis"; "Silly (mostly) women and a billion dollar industry: a very original and misogynistic joke"; "Other genre fiction can be great writing, but never romance", and "It's always mommy porn--even if there's no sex on the page"

But really, it’s more than a bit sad that year in, decade out, the same misogynistic bullshit is written and sold.

Accidentally stumbled upon your Blog, absolutely loved it, very intelligent and witty. I am a closeted romance reader and don’t see things are going to change any time soon. There is so much stigma attached…..

        Thank you.

I am sorry you are not comfortable openly reading romance. (I gave up feeling shame over my reading choices years ago myself, but I’m old and cranky, and entirely out of fucks to give)

Welcome to Romancelandia, Olia! We’re in blogs, on Twitter, at Reddit… lots of places where there’s no stigma to loving what you love. 🙂

      I should have said that!

Willa is right, Olia, there are plenty of spaces where what you love is loved and respected.
